On the Se San River flowing through the two provinces of Gia Lai and Kon Tum, Ialy Hydropower Plant is a national key project, the third largest in the country with a capacity of 720MW and an average electricity output of 3.68 billion kWh/year.
Ialy Hydropower Plant, belonging to the Vietnam Electricity Group, is the largest hydropower project in the hydropower cascade system on the Se San River, located in the two districts of Chu Pah, Gia Lai province and Sa Thay district, Kon Tum province. Ialy Hydropower Plant has 4 units, with a designed capacity of 720MW, accounting for nearly half of the total estimated capacity of about 1,500MW of the entire Se San River, with an average designed electricity output of 3 billion 680 million kWh/year. Since its inauguration, Ialy Hydropower Plant has supplied 42.6 billion kWh to the national grid.
In addition to its potential for electricity production, the Ialy Hydropower Project also creates a large, clear lake located in the middle of the Central Highlands mountains and forests with a surface area of 64.5 km2 and a capacity of 1.03 billion m3. The lake is an attractive eco-tourism destination for domestic and foreign tourists when coming to the Central Highlands thanks to its poetic and majestic scenery. Not only that, it is also a source of water and abundant aquatic resources for the people of the two provinces of Gia Lai and Kon Tum...
The Ialy Hydropower Project started construction in 1993 and was completed in 2003. The main plant is located in Ialy commune, Chu Pah district, Gia Lai province. A special thing is that most of the items of the Ialy Hydropower Plant are built underground in the mountains and is the only hydropower project in Vietnam with a 500kV oil cable system. After the Ialy Hydropower Plant, two other hydropower plants were also built on the Se San River, namely the Se San 3 Hydropower Plant, which started construction in 2002 with a designed capacity of 260MW, and the Pleikrong Hydropower Plant, which started construction in 2003 with a designed capacity of 100MW.
In 2007, in order to meet the development requirements of the hydropower system on the Se San River, the Vietnam Electricity Group converted the Ialy Hydropower Plant into the Ialy Hydropower Company to unify the management and operation of all three hydropower plants: Ialy, Se San 3 and Pleikrong with a total capacity of 1080MW, an average electricity output of 5 billion 310 million kWh/year.
According to Mr. Ta Van Luan, Director of Ialy Hydropower Company, the effective management and safe operation of these 3 plants not only ensures uninterrupted electricity supply to serve the development of life, economy and society in the Central Highlands region, but also contributes significantly to the generation of low-cost electricity, reducing the purchase of high-priced electricity. In 2012, Ialy Hydropower made an important milestone when the electricity output of all 3 plants reached 5 billion 838 million kWh (exceeding the average designed electricity output/year by 9%). This is a record electricity output in the 12 years of operation of these 3 hydropower plants.
In addition to electricity production, Ialy Hydropower Company is also trusted by many large corporations such as Hoang Anh Gia Lai, Vietnam Oil and Gas Group to participate in technical consulting for many large projects. Typical examples include the pilot transformer oil refining project of HAGL - Attapeu Sugarcane Factory (Laos); testing insulating oil samples for more than 100 transformers of Dung Quat Oil Refinery; consulting and supervising for Doc Cay Hydropower Plant (Thanh Hoa), Hoa Phu Hydropower Plant (Dak Lak); testing high voltage generators of Hua Na Hydropower Plant and Khe Bo Hydropower Plant (Nghe An).
Currently, Ialy Hydropower Company has coordinated with Power Construction Consulting Joint Stock Company I to complete a report on the plan to expand the scale of Ialy Hydropower Plant by 2 more units with a capacity of 180 MW/unit, bringing the total number of units to 6 with a total capacity of 1,080 MW.
According to calculations, expanding the scale of Ialy Hydropower Plant will significantly improve the power shortage that often occurs during the dry months in the Central Highlands. On the other hand, revenue from electricity sales will also increase by about more than 765 billion VND/year.
With its potential and position, Ialy Hydropower Company will continue to contribute effectively to the development of economic, cultural and social life in the Central Highlands region in particular and the industrialization and modernization process of the country in general./.
